ARPN Journal of Science and Technology:: Corticosterone as Inhibitor of Bufo Melanostictus Tadpole Growth
نویسندگان
چکیده
This investigation reports the effect of corticosterone on the growth of Bufo melanostictus tadpoles. Test tadpoles of experiment I (T-I), maintained in 1μg/ml solution of corticosterone, were 2.39mm shorter than controls by day 11. Test tadpoles of experiment II (T-II), maintained in 5μg/ml solution were 4.32mm shorter than their counterparts. Growth inhibition was dose related and became significant (p<0.05) when the larger amount was administered.

The "third eye"-- a new concept of trans-differentiation of pineal gland into median eye in amphibian tadpoles of Bufo melanostictus.
Median third eye was found to develop from transplanted pineal gland of external gill stage tadpoles in the recipient 5 toe stage tadpoles of Bufo melanostictus. Pineal gland along with a bit part of brain tissue of the donor external gill stage tadpole was cut out and transplanted into a pit made between two lateral eyes of 5 toe stage recipient tadpoles. Half of the operated tadpoles were tre...
متن کاملThe influence of visual and tactile stimulation on growth and metamorphosis in anuran larvae
1. Sensory modalities that allow tadpoles to assess their environment, and subsequently mediate their development, are not well understood. 2. By putting clay model tadpoles into the tanks with live tadpoles we have enhanced tactile and visual stimuli for tadpoles of three species ( Rana sylvatica , Bufo americanus and Xenopus laevis ) in a controlled fashion. The goal was to determine whether ...
متن کاملDevelopmental disruptions induced by insect growth regulator (Novaluron) in Bufo melanostictus tadpoles.
Novaluron is an insect growth regulator (IGR) used against fruit-borers and domestic pests. In this study, effects of different concentrations (0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5 microg l(-1)) of novaluron on the tail regeneration, limb development and metamorphosis were examined in Bufo melanostictus. Thyroxine (1.0, 2.0, 3.5, 5.0 microg l(-1)), which promotes amphibian development/metamorphosis, and vitamin...
متن کاملEffect of whole body gamma radiation on hepatic LDH activity, lactate, pyruvate concentration and rate of oxygen consumption in Bufo melanostictus.
Whole body Co60 gamma radiation induced changes in lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, pyruvate, lactate content and rate of oxygen (O2) consumption in a tropical hibernating anuran (Bufo melanostictus). In 3.5 and 7 Gy treated groups, a significant increase in LDH activity and lactate/pyruvate ratio was observed, whereas a significant decrease in O2 consumption rate was observed in treated an...
متن کاملPutative L-triiodothyronine receptors in the liver nuclei of mature tropical toad, Bufo melanostictus.
Thyroid hormones exert a major role in growth and differentiation of almost all types of tissues in animals, particularly in amphibian metamorphosis, through its specific nuclear receptor activation followed by gene expression. However, its function in mature tropical amphibians is less studied. The present study revealed the existence of a single class of specific nuclear receptor(s) in the li...
